Academy of Managed Care Pharmacy (AMCP)

Academy of Managed Care Pharmacy (AMCP)

The Academy of Managed Care Pharmacy is a national professional association of pharmacists and other health care practitioners who serve society by the application of medication management principles and strategies to improve health care for all. The principles of managed care pharmacy are based upon the use of scientific evidence to achieve healthy outcomes while making the best use of healthcare dollars. One of the key functions of a managed care pharmacist is to develop lists of medications called formularies that are covered by the insurer’s drug benefit. These formularies usually only include the most appropriate and effective medications available for any given disease state or condition. Managed care pharmacy also deals with disease state prevention and medication management. These fields of pharmacy are essential in ensuring that medications are distributed properly to prevent or mitigate drug shortages. Managed care pharmacy is applicable to all fields of pharmacy, as its principles of sound medication management are essential for both the improvement of patient care outcomes and the reduction of economic stress on both patients and healthcare delivery systems.

AMCP Pacific's biggest event is its Pharmacy and Therapeutics (P&T) competition, where teams will simulate the process of determining whether a drug should be added to an institution's drug formulary. This competition is a great way to improve one's clinical pharmaceutical skills in preparation for not only APPEs but for future pharmaceutical practices. AMCP's local P&T competition is run within the Fall and Spring trimesters.
